Postcard #3: 10 Things I Learned since I arrived in Thailand

Kathrin Folkendt Saturday December 20, 2014 @ 09:20 • 3 days ago

Ko Lanta

Postcard #3… It’s been a while. Mainly because writing those gets harder. I’ve settled here in Chiang Mai. What started as one great adventure into the unknown, has now turned into everyday life. And I mean that in the best possible sense. I drive down the same streets on my scooter, that the taxi driver took to my hotel, the night I arrived. Restaurants, corners, park benches – they’re not merely places anymore. They come with memories. Some good, some… well… not so good. But mostly the first. ;)

Since I came here, I’ve learned and realised a thing or two. And I thought it might be fun to share those with you today. So here we go!

  1. I learned how to use a killer knife and cook pad thai. And no worries: I will not turn into a food blogger anytime soon. I do know how to tell the 4 different Thai spices apart in a meal though by now! Impressive, huh?! ^^
  2. I learned how to ride a scooter without thinking I’ll die any minute. And no. That did not stop me from getting into an accident of course. Got away with a few bad scratches. But I didn’t freak out. And neither should you. All is good. Really. #thaitattoo
  3. Writing is thinking. Writing is remembering. Writing is money. Writing is everything and much more to me.
  4. On Digital Nomad-ism: It doesn’t have much in common with startup culture. People here don’t necessarily want to build ‘the next big thing’. They want to make a good living, work on something interesting and see the world. That may not make them Fortune 500-ers anytime soon, but it sure does seem to make (most of) them pretty happy. It’s not about possessions but about experiences.
  5. I still got it! I’ve moved around a lot when I was younger. Then I ‘got stuck’ in Vienna. And then I finally packed up again and came here. And I wasn’t sure how it was gonna be. But now, after a few months I’m happy to report: Yes! I can still make this happen and actually enjoy being in a new place, having to ‘figure it all out’ and starting from zero!
  6. I realized: You don’t get to choose what you love and what you hate in life. I will never like tomatoes, camping, whiskey or certain people. And that’s ok.
  7.  Sunscreen with SPF 50 is my friend. So is mosquito repellent.
  8. I learned to chill. Separating vacation and life isn’t necessary anymore. I don’t get upset as easily these days. I’m relaxed.
  9. Also: Friends will be friends. Always.

That’s it! I guess I’ll catch up with you all next year, when I’m back from Sri Lanka!

Happy Holidays!

That Time of the Year

Kathrin Folkendt Wednesday December 17, 2014 @ 07:21 • 6 days ago

Chiang Mai

I feel weird. I’m not in a country that celebrates Christmas, nor is New Year’s Eve here happening any time soon. And yet I can’t help feeling affected by all the “2014 in review” articles and posts, that keep littering my timeline. I catch myself looking back, when I should be looking forward.

It’s been quite a year. An exciting year, but also a pretty hard year. I’ve been in Asia for almost 4 months now and I notice how I’m starting to be forgotten in Austria. Although I hate to admit it, it makes me a little sad.

Will I ever go back? I don’t know. And it feels weird, not knowing what will happen in 4 months, when my visa runs out. I have 4 more months to go. Yet I’m haunted by a “Chiang Mai is almost over” feeling recently, although I could just stay. I don’t have to go back “home”. I don’t feel like anything or anyone is waiting for me there anymore. And I know that there are many possibilities. Many opportunities. Maybe I’m just overwhelmed. Maybe a little homesick. Maybe I’ve listened to Lana del Rey a little too much lately.

And maybe, just maybe it’s yet again just *that* time of the year again…
