Dearest Ruby friends,

We have returned! After a brief hiatus to enjoy the sun on the Croatian coast, the Ruby Meetup returns to the scene of the crime with a new dose of Ruby goodness.

We welcome our first speaker of the seasons - Aleš Kotnik from Toptal, who will dive deep into concurrency and let us know what he finds down the rabbit hole.

Come join us in Poligon at 18:00, where you'll be able to hear some amazing talks (second to be announced soon), and share your summer adventures over Toptal sponsored drinks and 1Tap bagels and cupcakes.

We can't wait to start the new season, it's gonna be amazeballs.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Talk 1: Concurrency in Ruby, Aleš Kotnik, Toptal

Concurrency is hard. Concurrency is not parallelism. Understanding MRI’s Global interpreter lock is your first step at getting concurrency and parallelism right in Ruby. But there is more.

Talk 2: Object-oriented programming in Ruby and Elixir, Tomaž Žlender, 1Tap by Receipt Bank

Object-oriented programming is the most wide-spread paradigm of programming languages. How do implementations differ from the object oriented paradigm envisioned by the person who gave it the name?

05/17 Picks!

In a series on this website we’ll entertain YOU with our picks - or: what we think is worth sharing - every week. Books, articles, gems, fun stuff… you’re in for an eclectic mix! So, here’s for the two-hundred-tenth edition:

Markus
  • Programming with a love of the implicit - DHH argues against “it’s always better to be explicit”
  • NASA’s ten coding commandments - Maybe following them everywhere would improve software quality in general? (although some of the rules are quite specific to low-level languages)
  • The Architects Below - Software influences behavior, often with implications that we software developers rarely think about when gathering requirements or building software.

04/19 Picks!

In a series on this website we’ll entertain YOU with our picks - or: what we think is worth sharing - every week. Books, articles, gems, fun stuff… you’re in for an eclectic mix! So, here’s for the two-hundred-sixth edition:

Markus
  • Versioning a Rails API - Thoughts on multiple strategies on how to version your API
  • Rails Benchmarking: Puma and MultiProcess - How to figure out how many threads and processes to configure Puma with. The actual numbers aren’t that interesting, but the way to get there is what’s important.
  • cssreference.io - For when you don’t remember what a (popular) CSS property actually does: this includes visual examples.
